The posts this week asked two questions about attitude: What gets you up and what puts you down. These are critical questions for anybody who isn’t willing to settle for what everybody else has. If you want something different, you have to fight for it. It is a struggle to keep your motivation and drive even just to get up out of bed in the morning. Getting up is only the start, however because the next task is to counter the negatives that tell everything is hopeless and not to even try.
Clearly the answer is a positive attitude that carries you forward to your dreams. You can’t let someone else control your thinking. So what can you do? How can you keep focused on your outrageous lifestyle goals and how can you fight off the negative forces that tell you you can’t do it? How can you have a positive attitude in a negative world? It is a challenge but a big part of the answer is to get reinforcements. Learn two important keys to developing and maintaining a positive attitude.
To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, I think most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. WE all have a choice to focus on the positive aspects of life or the negative aspects and in recent years, I’ve chosen to focus on the positives and been happier for it.
We always taught our children to look at a problem head on, decide what aspects of it you can control and what is out of your control. Focus on what you can do to make it better and let the rest go. There’s no point agonizing over what is out of our control.
I’ve found too that sometimes just taking a deep breath and relaxing goes a long way when negative things start intruding in life.
Joan,
Abraham Lincoln was a wise man. It has taken me a lifetime to lighten up about things I can’t control. I also have defined myself as a happy person. When something happens, I ask myself what a happy person would do.

“What would a happy person do?” That, Ralph, is a great way to stay focused on the positive. I like that question a lot.

Bob,
Amazingly, it isn’t so easy. Somehow I have to fight my nature to even ask the question.

Maintaining a positive attitude works for me. I think the key is to not dwell on negative thoughts or give them much airtime in your mind.
