More Tongue Tickling Words

Image by numbphoto – Color mad via Flickr

I have a thing for words.  I like the sounds and the way they contort your mouth and tongue when you say them. I spent a whole post on flibbertigibbet recently but you don’t stumble over wonderful words everyday.  Most people avoid words of more than two syllables so you aren’t likely to get much inspiration from talking to your friends and neighbors.  You have to watch Masterpiece Theatre or Merchant and Ivory movies or read Dickens or Thackery.

Today, however, I discovered a treasure trove of tongue tickling words, 37 of them and I want to share.  Some of them are only so so but you have to applaud the effort.  I will share one of two of the best just as a teaser to make sure that you check them all out. What do you think of pusillanimous or maybe rapscallion.

Head on over for some fun.  Make your mouth happy.

Well, I won’t be willy-nilly about it, but I will say that that list was suave and mischievous, albeit I really enjoyed the tomfoolery and befuddled tutelage. Some of the words were behemoth and monstrous, but I was more impressed at the musculature and mugwump. I found them simply superfluous! 🙂

I am glad you are loving words too. I hope you were saying them out loud and giving your mouth a workout.

Something funny about words… Back in the 7th grade I memorized the longest word in dictionary (at the time), and to this day (some 30 years later) I still know it. That word is:
    Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.
(which is a Miner’s Black Lung Disease)

    Now that’s a mouthful! 🙂

It amazes me that doctors or somebody comes up with these words and then they never use them. They use abbreviations.

I love using fun words. I had used some of them in writing my pirate novel just this morning! and I love rapscallion. I will have to work that one in. Thanks for the find Ralph!
